Understanding and treating Hyperpigmentation

by Utkarsh Gupta 17 Jun 2024

Are brown spots showing up on your face? These unwarranted spots are a result of hyperpigmentation that occurs due to a high level of melanin production. It’s a pigment that determines our skin colour. Hyperpigmentation manifests as brown spots, patches, or an uneven skin tone.

Reasons behind these pigmentation issues can be excessive sunlight exposure which prompts melanin production, causing sunspots. Hormonal shifts can have the same effect, seen during pregnancy or whilst taking oral contraceptive pills, which causes a hormonally induced hyperpigmentation called melasma. Then there's inflammatory hyperpigmentation, where traumatic skin conditions like acne can result in dark blemishes.

These can be treated by use of active ingredients as they seep deep into the skin's pores. Some active ingredients which can help are niacinamide which aids in collagen production and possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which contribute to lightening dark spots. Vitamin C helps to build skin barriers and shields from UV rays. Furthermore, Hyaluronic acid helps maintain skin hydration by retaining moisture, thereby preventing irritation. Natural ingredients like licorice extract can help inhibit melanin production, fading dark spots and promoting a more even skin tone. Tea tree extract promotes skin cell renewal, soothes the skin and mitigates inflammation associated with hyperpigmentation. Furthermore, Aloe Vera nourishes the skin and supports its healing process.
